What is JPHO?

The Junior Physics Olympiad (JPhO) is a competitive examination in India designed for secondary school students who have a strong aptitude for physics. It is the second stage of the Indian Physics Olympiad Programme, following the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP). JPhO is conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). This exam aims to identify and nurture young physics talent for participation in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). The JPhO is held annually at various centres across India, typically in January or February. Students who clear the NSEP become eligible for the JPhO. The exam consists of theoretical and experimental problem-solving, testing deep conceptual understanding and application skills. Success in JPhO paves the way for the Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO) and subsequent training camps. For Indian students aspiring to represent the country at the international level, JPhO is a critical milestone. It is highly relevant for JEE Advanced preparation as the syllabus overlaps significantly with Class 11 and 12 physics.
