Juvenile Justice Act
Full Form of JJA
What is JJA?
The Juvenile Justice Act (JJA), officially the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, is the primary legal framework in India for handling children in conflict with the law and children in need of care and protection. It replaced the earlier Juvenile Justice Act of 2000 and was further amended in 2021. The Act establishes a child-friendly approach by setting up Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs) and Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) across districts, and outlines procedures for rehabilitation, adoption, and foster care. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that minors who commit offenses are treated with a focus on reform rather than punishment, while also protecting vulnerable children from abuse, trafficking, and neglect. The JJA is invoked by police, courts, and social welfare departments whenever a case involves a person below 18 years of age. For competitive exams like UPSC, judiciary, and state civil services, the JJA is a significant topic in the law and social justice syllabus, often appearing in questions about child rights and recent amendments.
