Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Full Form of JIA
What is JIA?
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is a chronic autoimmune condition characterized by persistent joint inflammation in children under the age of 16. It is the most common form of arthritis in children, encompassing several subtypes such as oligoarticular, polyarticular, and systemic JIA. In India, JIA is a significant pediatric rheumatological concern, with an estimated prevalence of about 1 in 1,000 children. Symptoms include joint swelling, pain, stiffness, and sometimes fever or rash. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, supported by blood tests and imaging, and management involves a multidisciplinary approach including medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologics. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent long-term joint damage and disability. Awareness about JIA in India is gradually increasing, but challenges remain in access to specialist care and affordable treatment. For medical students, JIA is a key topic in pediatrics and orthopedics exams, often featured in NEET PG and other postgraduate entrance tests due to its complex presentation and management protocols. Patient support groups and government initiatives like the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) help in early identification and referral.
