Integrated Zoonoses Surveillance
Full Form of IZS
What is IZS?
Integrated Zoonoses Surveillance (IZS) is a strategic framework under India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, designed to systematically monitor and control zoonotic diseases—those transmitted between animals and humans. It integrates data from human health, animal husbandry, and wildlife sectors to enable early detection and rapid response. IZS plays a critical role in India's One Health initiative, addressing diseases such as rabies, brucellosis, leptospirosis, and avian influenza. The programme operates through state-level surveillance units and collaborates with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). IZS is used during outbreak investigations, routine surveillance, and capacity building of diagnostic laboratories. It is particularly relevant in rural and peri-urban areas where livestock and human populations intersect. For students preparing for medical, veterinary, or civil services exams, IZS is increasingly featured in questions on public health policy and emerging infectious diseases. The programme also supports antimicrobial resistance surveillance and pandemic preparedness. By bridging veterinary and medical surveillance, IZS strengthens India's health security architecture.
