Intravenous Pyelogram
Full Form of IVP
What is IVP?
Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a contrast dye injected into a vein to visualize the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. The dye travels through the bloodstream, is filtered by the kidneys, and outlines the urinary tract on X-ray images. In India, IVP is commonly performed to detect kidney stones, tumors, blockages, or structural abnormalities in the urinary system. It is particularly relevant in regions with high incidence of urolithiasis (kidney stones), such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. The procedure is usually done in hospital radiology departments under the supervision of a radiologist or urologist. While modern alternatives like CT urography and ultrasound have become more prevalent, IVP remains a cost-effective and accessible option in many Indian public and private healthcare settings. For medical students and healthcare professionals preparing for exams like AIIMS, NEET PG, or USMLE, understanding the indications, contraindications, and interpretation of IVP images is essential. The test is also sometimes used in pre-operative assessments for surgery involving the urinary tract. Despite being less common today, IVP holds historical significance in the evolution of urological imaging.
