Indian Super League
Full Form of ISL
What is ISL?
The Indian Super League (ISL) is the premier professional football league in India, established in 2013 by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in collaboration with three sports marketing companies – IMG, Reliance Industries, and Star India. Designed to popularize football in a cricket-dominated nation, the ISL follows a franchise-based model similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL). Initially a short tournament, it became the top-tier league in 2017 after merging with the I-League. The league runs from October to March, featuring 12 franchise teams representing major cities such as Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Goa. Matches are broadcast extensively on television and digital platforms, drawing large audiences and increasing youth participation in football. The ISL has attracted international stars and coaches, raising the standard of domestic football. It also serves as a pathway for Indian players to gain exposure and improve skills, with the top team qualifying for the AFC Cup. For competitive exams like UPSC or sports management courses, the ISL is often cited as a successful example of sports commercialization in India.
