Issuer Identification Number
Full Form of IIN
What is IIN?
The Issuer Identification Number (IIN) is a six-digit prefix of a credit or debit card number that uniquely identifies the financial institution that issued the card. In India, every bank that issues payment cards—such as State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and others—is assigned a specific IIN by the card network (Visa, Mastercard, RuPay, etc.). This number is used to route transactions to the correct card network and bank for authorization, clearing, and settlement. The IIN is also known as the Bank Identification Number (BIN). It appears as the first six digits of the 16-digit card number printed on the front of the card. Understanding IIN is important for banking professionals, fintech developers, and students preparing for banking and financial exams like IBPS, SBI PO, and RBI Grade B, where questions on card payment systems and security are common. The IIN helps prevent fraud and ensures seamless electronic payment processing across the country's growing digital infrastructure.
