Indian Handicrafts Board
Full Form of IHB
What is IHB?
The Indian Handicrafts Board (IHB) is a statutory board under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, established in 1952. Its primary role is to promote, develop, and export Indian handicrafts, supporting millions of artisans across the country. The board formulates policies, implements schemes such as the Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme (CHCDS) and Marketing Support and Services Scheme, and provides training, design intervention, and financial assistance. It operates through regional offices and works closely with state handicraft corporations and export promotion councils. The IHB is crucial for preserving India’s rich cultural heritage, generating rural employment, and boosting foreign exchange earnings. In competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, questions often appear on the IHB’s functions, schemes, and its role in the handicraft sector under the broader topics of Indian economy and art and culture. The board also organizes national fairs like the Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair to showcase products globally. Its efforts have significantly contributed to making Indian handicrafts a USD 3 billion industry, empowering artisans and sustaining traditional crafts.
