Indian Hockey Association
Full Form of IHA
What is IHA?
The Indian Hockey Association (IHA) is the apex governing body for field hockey in India, responsible for the development, promotion, and regulation of the sport nationwide. Established to oversee national-level tournaments, training programs, and the selection of players for international competitions, the IHA works in coordination with the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Despite the formation of Hockey India in 2009 as the primary federation recognized by the FIH, the IHA continues to be referenced in historical contexts, particularly when discussing the early years of Indian hockey's golden era. The association played a pivotal role in India's dominance in Olympic hockey, managing the national team that won eight gold medals between 1928 and 1980. Today, the term is often encountered in sports trivia, competitive exam questions, and discussions about Indian sports administration. For students preparing for UPSC, SSC, or sports journalism exams, knowing the IHA's contribution to India's sporting heritage is essential, as questions frequently appear on the evolution of hockey governance in the country.
