International Geophysical Year
Full Form of IGY
What is IGY?
The International Geophysical Year (IGY) was a landmark global scientific initiative conducted from July 1957 to December 1958, involving 67 countries, including India, in coordinated research across geophysics, oceanography, glaciology, and space science. The IGY aimed to advance understanding of Earth's physical processes by sharing data and resources on a scale never before attempted. India actively participated through its nascent space program under Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, establishing observation stations for cosmic rays, geomagnetism, and atmospheric studies. The IGY also spurred India's involvement in Antarctica research and laid the foundation for organizations like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The term is commonly referenced in textbooks on science history and space exploration. For competitive exams such as UPSC or SSC, the IGY is a significant topic under ‘Science & Technology’ and ‘International Campaigns.’ It remains a benchmark for collaborative research, demonstrating how nations can unite for scientific advancement.
