Indian Drug Manufacturers' Association
Full Form of IDMA
What is IDMA?
The Indian Drug Manufacturers' Association, commonly known as IDMA, is one of the oldest and most influential trade bodies representing the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector in India. Established in 1961, the association is headquartered in Mumbai and represents both small-scale and large-scale drug manufacturers across the country. IDMA plays a crucial role in liaising between pharmaceutical companies and regulatory authorities, including the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, helping shape policies that affect drug pricing, manufacturing standards, and exports. The organisation frequently submits representations to the government on matters related to the Drug and Cosmetics Act, quality control norms, and the implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices. IDMA also organises seminars, training programmes, and an annual conference that brings together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers. Its members produce a significant share of the medicines consumed in India and exported globally, making IDMA an important voice in discussions on affordable healthcare and the Make in India initiative. For students preparing for pharmacy, medical, or civil services examinations, understanding IDMA's role is often useful, as questions on pharmaceutical regulatory bodies and industry associations regularly feature in competitive exams.
