What is HPC?
High Performance Computing (HPC) refers to the use of supercomputers and parallel processing techniques to solve complex computational problems at extremely high speeds. In India, HPC plays a pivotal role in domains such as weather forecasting, climate modeling, drug discovery, aerospace simulations, and genomic research. Institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) actively deploy HPC systems, including the Param series of supercomputers. HPC is also used in academic research at premier institutes like IITs and NITs, enabling students and faculty to run large-scale simulations and data analytics. For competitive exams like GATE, JEST, and UGC-NET, knowledge of HPC concepts, parallel computing architectures, and performance metrics (FLOPS) is essential. The technology is increasingly relevant in India’s push toward AI, machine learning, and Big Data, under initiatives like Digital India and Smart Cities. HPC facilities are shared across national research networks like the National Knowledge Network (NKN), fostering collaborative innovation. As India scales its computational infrastructure, HPC remains a cornerstone of scientific and industrial progress.
