Hazardous Waste Management
Full Form of HMW
What is HMW?
Hazardous Waste Management (HMW) refers to the systematic handling, treatment, storage, disposal, and monitoring of waste materials that pose substantial or potential threats to public health or the environment. In India, HMW is governed by the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016, which are enforced by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and state pollution control boards. These rules mandate that industries generating hazardous waste must obtain authorization, maintain proper records, and ensure safe disposal through authorized recyclers or treatment facilities. HMW is critical in sectors like chemicals, pharmaceuticals, batteries, and paints, where improper management can lead to soil and water contamination. The concept is widely studied in environmental science and engineering courses, and it frequently appears in competitive exams such as UPSC, state public service commissions, and GATE for environmental engineering. Effective HMW not only safeguards ecosystems but also aligns with India's commitments under the Basel Convention on transboundary movement of hazardous wastes.
