Human Metapneumovirus
Full Form of HMP
What is HMP?
Human Metapneumovirus (HMP) is a respiratory virus belonging to the Pneumoviridae family, first identified in 2001. It causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections, ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia, particularly in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals. In India, HMP is a significant contributor to seasonal respiratory illness outbreaks, especially during the winter and monsoon months. It is diagnosed through RT-PCR or antigen tests and is managed symptomatically as no specific antiviral treatment exists. The virus spreads via respiratory droplets and close contact, making it a concern in crowded settings like schools and hospitals. Indian health authorities monitor HMP cases as part of integrated disease surveillance, and awareness has grown after recent global alerts. For students preparing for NEET, AIIMS, and other medical entrance exams, understanding HMP's virology, transmission, and clinical features is important as it appears in questions on emerging viral infections. Public health campaigns in India emphasize hygiene and masking to reduce spread. HMP is distinct from influenza and RSV but shares similar seasonal patterns.
