Himachal Kisan Kendra
Full Form of HMK
What is HMK?
Himachal Kisan Kendra (HMK) is a state-level agricultural extension and farmer welfare organization operating primarily in Himachal Pradesh, India. Established to bridge the gap between modern farming techniques and traditional practices, HMK functions as a nodal centre for disseminating knowledge on sustainable agriculture, crop diversification, soil health, and water conservation. It also facilitates access to credit, subsidies, and market linkages for small and marginal farmers. The organisation collaborates with local Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and the Himachal Pradesh Department of Agriculture to conduct training workshops, demonstrations, and awareness camps in rural areas. HMK plays a crucial role in promoting horticulture, floriculture, and off-season vegetable cultivation—key sectors in the state’s hill economy. Its field officers regularly visit villages to advise on pest management, organic farming certification, and post-harvest technology. For students preparing for state-level competitive exams such as HPAS or HPPSC, understanding HMK’s functions is relevant under the agriculture and rural development sections. The centre also liaises with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to implement watershed programmes and farmer producer organisation (FPO) formation. By empowering farmers with knowledge and resources, HMK contributes to doubling farmer income and reducing distress migration from the hills.
