Household Consumption
Full Form of HHC
What is HHC?
Household Consumption (HHC) refers to the total expenditure incurred by resident households on goods and services for final use within a domestic economy. In India, HHC is a key macroeconomic indicator measured by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) through its periodic consumption expenditure surveys. These surveys capture spending on food, clothing, housing, education, healthcare, and other essentials, providing critical insights into living standards, poverty levels, and regional disparities. The data is used by the Reserve Bank of India to track demand-side inflation, by the Ministry of Finance for policy formulation, and by economists to compute the Gross Domestic Product via the expenditure method. HHC surveys are typically conducted every five years, with the latest round being the 75th (2017–18). Understanding HHC is crucial for students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, UGC NET, and RBI Grade B, as questions frequently appear on consumption patterns, poverty estimation, and survey methodologies. The term is widely referenced in Indian economic reports, academic literature, and government white papers. HHC also helps evaluate the effectiveness of social welfare schemes such as PMGKAY and direct benefit transfers, making it a foundational concept in Indian economic analysis.
