What is HGL?
The Hydraulic Grade Line (HGL) is a graphical representation in fluid mechanics that shows the sum of pressure head and elevation head along a pipeline or open channel. It indicates the energy available in the fluid due to pressure and elevation, excluding velocity head. In India, the HGL is extensively used by civil engineers in the design of water supply systems, irrigation networks, and drainage infrastructure to ensure adequate pressure and prevent cavitation. It is plotted alongside the Energy Grade Line (EGL) to analyze flow characteristics, friction losses, and pump requirements.
