What is HFV?
High Frequency Ventilation (HFV) is a specialized mode of mechanical ventilation used to support patients with severe respiratory failure, particularly in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. Unlike conventional ventilation that delivers normal tidal volumes at physiological rates, HFV provides very small tidal volumes at extremely high respiratory rates (typically 300–900 breaths per minute). This approach minimizes lung injury by reducing barotrauma and volutrauma, making it ideal for fragile lungs in preterm infants or patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In India, HFV is employed in tertiary care NICUs and PICUs when conventional ventilation fails or is contraindicated, such as in cases of persistent pulmonary hypertension, meconium aspiration syndrome, or pneumothorax. The technique requires specialized ventilators and trained personnel, and its use is growing with the expansion of critical care infrastructure.
