High-Density Lipoprotein
Full Form of HDL
What is HDL?
High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) is a type of lipoprotein often referred to as 'good cholesterol' because it helps transport excess cholesterol from the body tissues back to the liver for excretion or recycling, thereby reducing the risk of plaque buildup in arteries. In India, where cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of mortality, HDL testing is a standard part of lipid profile screenings. It is measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) and is used by doctors to assess heart health. A level above 60 mg/dL is considered protective, while below 40 mg/dL increases risk. HDL's role is frequently discussed in both preventive health advice and clinical treatment of conditions like diabetes and hypertension. For competitive exams like NEET PG or AIIMS, understanding HDL functions and its inverse relationship with cardiovascular disease is crucial. Lifestyle factors such as regular exercise, consumption of unsaturated fats, and moderate alcohol intake can boost HDL levels, making it a key focus in India's growing public health campaigns against heart disease.
