Hydroxychloroquine
Full Form of HCQ
What is HCQ?
Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is an antimalarial drug also used to treat autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus. In India, HCQ gained widespread attention during the COVID-19 pandemic when it was controversially recommended as a prophylactic for healthcare workers and as a treatment for mild cases, despite mixed global evidence. The drug is primarily used by rheumatologists and infectious disease specialists, and it is available under brand names like Plaquenil. It works by modulating the immune system and interfering with parasite growth. HCQ is frequently examined in medical entrance exams like NEET PG and pharmacy licensure tests, where its indications, side effects (e.g., retinopathy), and drug interactions are important topics. Its role in India's COVID-19 management highlighted the tension between emergency use authorizations and evidence-based medicine, sparking debates on policy and clinical practice. Today, HCQ remains a standard therapy for autoimmune disorders but is no longer widely used for COVID-19.
