Hepatitis B Virus

What is HBV?

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is a DNA virus that causes hepatitis B, a potentially life-threatening liver infection. It is transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids, and can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. In India, HBV is a major public health concern, with an estimated 40 million carriers, making it one of the highest burdens globally. The virus is endemic, and transmission often occurs perinatally from mother to child, through unsafe injections, blood transfusions, or unprotected sexual contact. HBV is diagnosed via blood tests for surface antigen (HBsAg) and other markers. Vaccination is highly effective and is part of India's Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) since 2002, given at birth, 6, 10, and 14 weeks. Despite this, awareness and screening remain low, especially in rural areas. The National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP) aims to eliminate hepatitis by 2030. For medical and nursing exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, and UPSC, HBV virology, transmission, and management are frequently tested. Understanding HBV is crucial for healthcare professionals in India to prevent its spread and manage complications.
