General Weighted Average
Full Form of GWA
What is GWA?
General Weighted Average (GWA) is a cumulative grading metric widely used in Indian schools, colleges, and universities to evaluate a student's overall academic performance. It represents the weighted mean of all course grades, where each grade is multiplied by the number of credit hours or weight assigned to that subject. In India, GWA is commonly adopted by institutions following the semester system – particularly in engineering, management, and science streams – alongside other indicators like CGPA and SGPA. For example, a student earning an A (4 points) in a 3-credit course contributes 12 points, while a B+ (3.5 points) in a 2-credit course adds 7 points; the sum of these weighted points divided by total credits yields the GWA. This metric helps colleges determine academic standing, class rankings, and eligibility for scholarships or higher studies. In competitive exams like GATE or CAT, past GWA is often considered during shortlisting, making it a key performance indicator for students across the country.
