Gunshot Wound
Full Form of GSW
What is GSW?
A gunshot wound (GSW) is a traumatic injury caused by a bullet or projectile from a firearm. In India, GSWs are typically encountered in emergency departments, often resulting from accidents, criminal violence, or misuse of licensed or illegal firearms. Though less frequent than in countries with higher gun ownership, GSWs remain a significant medical concern in regions affected by conflict or easy access to arms. The management of GSW follows Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) protocols, with initial focus on airway, breathing, circulation, and rapid hemorrhage control. In Indian hospitals, particularly in trauma centres and military hospitals, GSW cases require multidisciplinary care involving emergency physicians, surgeons, and radiologists. For medical students and residents preparing for NEET PG or the MS Surgery exam, understanding the pathophysiology, classification (low-velocity vs high-velocity), and treatment principles of GSW is essential. The injury can lead to severe tissue damage, infection, and long-term disability if not managed promptly. Awareness of GSW is also relevant for forensic medicine examinations. Despite strict gun control laws, the incidence of GSW in India is not negligible, making it an important topic in trauma education.
