Glutathione
Full Form of GSH
What is GSH?
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide molecule composed of three amino acids: glutamine, cysteine, and glycine. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals, toxins, and heavy metals. In India, GSH is widely discussed in both medical and wellness circles—from clinical use in liver detoxification, immune support, and chronic disease management to popular off-label use for skin lightening and anti-aging. The compound is naturally produced in the body, but levels can decline due to poor diet, pollution, stress, and aging. Doctors sometimes recommend intravenous or oral GSH supplements for conditions like fatty liver, Parkinson’s disease, or even as an adjunct in cancer therapy. However, the Indian medical community remains divided on its cosmetic use, with regulatory bodies like the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) cautioning against unlicensed skin lightening injections. Exam relevance: High—GSH is a key topic in biochemistry for NEET PG, AIIMS, and other medical entrance exams, especially questions on redox reactions and detoxification pathways.
