Gross Registered Tonnage
Full Form of GRT
What is GRT?
Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) is a standard volumetric measurement used to quantify the total internal capacity of a merchant ship, excluding certain spaces like crew quarters and navigation areas. In India, GRT is fundamental to the maritime and shipping industry. It is employed by port authorities, such as the Mumbai Port Trust and Chennai Port, to calculate docking fees, pilotage charges, and tonnage taxes. Indian customs and the Directorate General of Shipping rely on GRT for vessel registration, safety surveys, and regulatory compliance under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958. GRT is also referenced in international conventions like SOLAS and MARPOL, which India adopts. Knowledge of GRT is essential for students appearing in Indian shipping examinations like the M.Sc. (Nautical Science) entrance or the Indian Maritime University common entrance test. While increasingly replaced by Gross Tonnage (GT) under the International Tonnage Convention, GRT remains widely cited in historical ship records and legacy documents. Understanding GRT helps in evaluating ship size, cargo capacity, and operational costs, making it a key concept in logistics and trade courses across Indian maritime academies.
