General Reservation Quota
Full Form of GRQ
What is GRQ?
General Reservation Quota (GRQ) is a specific allocation of reserved seats in Indian Railways earmarked for general category passengers who do not belong to any reserved category (SC/ST/OBC). It is separate from the quota for reserved categories and ensures that a fixed number of berths in each train class (sleeper, AC, etc.) are available exclusively for unreserved general passengers. GRQ is applied during the dynamic reservation process on IRCTC and at railway counters, typically releasing a block of seats at the start of booking or as cancellations occur. In India, GRQ helps maintain equity by providing access to reserved travel for those not eligible for other quotas. It is commonly referenced in railway recruitment exams, where candidates must understand different quota types. The quota is particularly important for long-distance trains linking major cities, ensuring that general passengers are not completely excluded from reserved compartments. GRQ is also distinct from the general (GN) quota, which is the main unreserved pool; GRQ is a subset dedicated to general travelers.
