General Nursing Service
Full Form of GNS
What is GNS?
General Nursing Service (GNS) refers to the branch of healthcare that encompasses the provision of basic nursing care to patients in hospitals, clinics, and community health settings. In India, GNS is a recognised category within the nursing profession, distinct from specialised nursing services such as psychiatric or paediatric nursing. It is primarily delivered by registered nurses who hold a diploma or degree in nursing, including General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) or B.Sc. Nursing. The service plays a vital role in supporting doctors, managing patient hygiene, administering medications, and monitoring vital signs. GNS is widely used in government and private hospitals, primary health centres, and rural healthcare facilities across India. It is also a key component of the public health system under the National Health Mission. For nursing students preparing for competitive exams like AIIMS NORCET, ESIC, or state nursing officer recruitment, understanding the scope and responsibilities of GNS is essential, as questions often focus on nursing cadres and their functions. The service ensures that basic medical care reaches all sections of society, contributing to India’s goal of universal health coverage.
