What is GMI?

General Motors India (GMI) was the Indian subsidiary of the American automotive giant General Motors. It commenced operations in 1996 and for over two decades manufactured and sold popular Chevrolet models such as the Beat, Spark, Tavera, Cruze, and Enjoy. GMI had manufacturing plants in Halol, Gujarat, and Talegaon, Maharashtra, and contributed significantly to the Indian automobile market during the 2000s. However, due to intense competition from domestic and international rivals, along with regulatory changes and declining sales, the company decided to exit the domestic market in 2017. The Halol plant was sold to China's SAIC Motor, while the Talegaon facility was repurposed as an export hub.
