Grameen Kaushalya Yojana
Full Form of GKY
What is GKY?
Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (GKY) is a flagship skill development initiative launched by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM). It aims to provide market-linked skill training and placement opportunities to rural youth from economically weaker sections, particularly Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other marginalized communities. The scheme emphasizes demand-driven, placement-linked training with a focus on sectors such as retail, hospitality, healthcare, construction, and manufacturing. GKY operates through partnerships with state governments, training providers, and industry employers, ensuring that trained youth receive sustainable employment or self-employment support. Launched in 2014, the scheme covers all states and union territories, helping reduce rural-to-urban migration by creating local livelihood opportunities. For competitive examinations like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, GKY is frequently referenced under rural development schemes and skill India initiatives, making it an important topic for current affairs preparation.
