Gujarat Janta Front
Full Form of GJF
What is GJF?
The Gujarat Janta Front (GJF) was a regional political party active in the Indian state of Gujarat during the mid-1990s. Formed in 1995 by former Chief Minister Chhabildas Mehta, the party emerged from a split in the Indian National Congress. Its primary objective was to provide an alternative political platform for voters disillusioned with both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The GJF contested the 1995 Gujarat Legislative Assembly election and secured a handful of seats, but its influence waned rapidly after the 1996 election, leading to its merger into the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) later. The party focused on issues such as farmers' welfare, rural development, and social justice, drawing support mainly from the Patidar and OBC communities. In the competitive landscape of Gujarat politics, the GJF represented the fragmentation of the Congress base during that period. While the party is no longer active, its brief existence is studied in Indian political history as an example of regional front formation and coalition dynamics. For students preparing for state-level civil services exams, understanding the GJF provides insight into the shifting alliances and electoral strategies that shaped Gujarat's political evolution in the 1990s.
