Great Indian Bustard
Full Form of GIB
What is GIB?
The Great Indian Bustard (GIB) is a large, critically endangered bird species native to the Indian subcontinent, primarily found in the arid grasslands of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. It is one of the heaviest flying birds in the world and is the state bird of Rajasthan. The GIB is notable for its striking appearance: the male has a black crown, white neck, and brown body, while the female is smaller and duller. This species plays a crucial role in grassland ecosystems as an indicator of habitat health. In India, GIB is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and is listed in Schedule I, giving it the highest level of legal protection. The bird faces severe threats from habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, infrastructure development, and power line collisions. Conservation efforts include the establishment of the Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary in Rajasthan, captive breeding programs, and the installation of bird diverters on power lines. The GIB is frequently discussed in competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, particularly in sections on biodiversity, endangered species, and conservation policies. Its decline has become a symbol of the challenges faced by India's grassland ecosystems.
