What is GDS?
Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) is a cadre of rural postal employees under the Department of Posts, Government of India. Unlike regular postal staff, GDS are appointed on a part-time or full-time basis to deliver mail, sell stamps, and handle basic post office services in villages and small towns where a full-fledged post office may not exist. The role was introduced to extend postal connectivity to remote areas, aligning with the government’s vision of inclusive communication.
