Grameen Bharat Welfare and Livelihood Scheme
Full Form of GBWLS
What is GBWLS?
The Grameen Bharat Welfare and Livelihood Scheme, commonly referred to as GBWLS, is a centrally sponsored welfare initiative designed to uplift the economic conditions of rural households across India. The scheme focuses on providing financial assistance, skill development training, and self-employment opportunities to families living below the poverty line in village areas. Operated jointly by the Ministry of Rural Development and various state-level implementing agencies, GBWLS aims to strengthen the rural economy by promoting micro-enterprises, supporting traditional artisans, and encouraging women-led self-help groups. The programme is particularly active in districts identified as economically backward, with beneficiaries receiving grants, low-interest loans, and handholding support for at least two years after fund disbursement. The scheme also integrates with the digital infrastructure of banks and CSC centres to ensure transparent fund transfers directly into beneficiary accounts. For candidates preparing for UPSC, state PSC, and banking examinations, understanding GBWLS is useful as questions on rural welfare schemes frequently appear in the general awareness and current affairs sections.
