Global Burden of Disease
Full Form of GBD
What is GBD?
The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is a comprehensive epidemiological research program led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) that quantifies health loss from hundreds of diseases, injuries, and risk factors across the world. It uses metrics like Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years of Life Lost (YLL), and Years Lived with Disability (YLD) to measure morbidity and mortality. In India, the GBD is a critical tool for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to inform public health policy, resource allocation, and national health programmes. It is widely cited in academic literature, government reports like the National Health Profile, and media discussions on health priorities. The study highlights India's dual burden of communicable (e.g., tuberculosis, diarrhoeal diseases) and non-communicable diseases (e.g., cardiovascular diseases, diabetes), along with emerging risk factors like air pollution and dietary risks. For exam aspirants, GBD data frequently appears in UPSC, NEET-PG, and public health entrance exams, often in questions on disease burden trends or the epidemiological transition in India. The study is updated periodically, with the latest round covering 1990–2021, making it an authoritative source for evidence-based health planning.
