What is GAU?
Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU) is a premier agricultural education and research institution located in Anand, Gujarat, India. Established in 1969 under the Gujarat Agricultural University Act, it was the first agricultural university in Gujarat and one of the earliest in India. GAU was originally a single campus university but later restructured into four separate state agricultural universities (SAUs) in 2004: Anand Agricultural University, Junagadh Agricultural University, Navsari Agricultural University, and Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University. Despite the split, the acronym GAU remains widely associated with the legacy and original institution, especially in historical and competitive exam contexts. GAU played a pivotal role in the Green Revolution in Gujarat by developing high-yielding crop varieties and training thousands of agriculture graduates and extension workers. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in agriculture, horticulture, dairy science, and allied fields. The university also conducts research on soil health, water management, and pest control relevant to Gujarat's agro-climatic zones. For students preparing for ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) entrance exams or state agricultural services, knowledge of GAU's history and contributions is often tested. GAU's alumni network includes notable scientists and policymakers who have shaped Indian agriculture. The institution exemplifies the importance of region-specific agricultural education in India’s rural development.
