What is GAS?
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) is a three-stage physiological response to stress first described by endocrinologist Hans Selye in 1936. The stages are alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. During the alarm stage, the body releases stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol to prepare for a fight-or-flight response. In the resistance stage, the body attempts to adapt to the ongoing stressor, maintaining elevated hormone levels. If stress continues for a prolonged period, the exhaustion stage sets in, leading to depletion of energy reserves and increased vulnerability to illness. In India, GAS is an essential concept in medical and psychology curricula, particularly for NEET PG, MBBS, and undergraduate psychology exams. It is also discussed in occupational health and wellness programs to help manage workplace stress. Understanding GAS helps clinicians diagnose stress-related disorders and recommend appropriate interventions. Exam questions often focus on the sequence of stages, the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and the consequences of chronic stress. The model remains relevant in modern research on psychoneuroimmunology and lifestyle diseases prevalent in India, such as hypertension and diabetes.
