General Aptitude Battery
Full Form of GAB
What is GAB?
The General Aptitude Battery (GAB) is a standardized assessment tool designed to measure a candidate's innate cognitive abilities, including numerical reasoning, verbal comprehension, logical analysis, and problem-solving skills. In India, GAB is primarily used by competitive exam bodies—such as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Staff Selection Commission (SSC), and various state public service commissions—as part of preliminary screening tests for civil services, banking, and other government recruitment. It also appears in entrance exams for management (e.g., MAT, CMAT) and certain technical courses where aptitude is a key criterion. The test format typically includes multiple-choice questions under tight time constraints, emphasizing accuracy and speed. Its role is to provide an objective measure of a candidate's raw mental agility, separate from subject-specific knowledge. For UPSC aspirants, the CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) is essentially a refined version of a general aptitude battery. Mastery of GAB-style questions is crucial because they often determine whether a candidate qualifies for the next round. Regular practice with mock GAB papers has become a staple in Indian coaching centres, underscoring its exam-relevance and the high stakes attached to performance.
