Free Zone Scheme
Full Form of FZS
What is FZS?
The Free Zone Scheme (FZS) is a policy framework under India's Special Economic Zone (SEZ) regime, designed to promote export-oriented manufacturing and services by designating specific geographic areas as duty-free zones. Under this scheme, units operating within a Free Zone enjoy exemptions from customs duties, central excise, and other indirect taxes on inputs, capital goods, and raw materials used for production. The scheme also simplifies licensing procedures and provides infrastructure support such as power, water, and logistics. It is primarily implemented through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, with operational oversight by the respective SEZ authorities. The FZS is used in coastal states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, where ports and industrial corridors facilitate trade. Its role in India is critical for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), boosting exports, generating employment, and integrating domestic firms with global value chains. For competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and UGC-NET, the FZS is a relevant topic under the economics section, often compared with other export promotion schemes like Export Processing Zones (EPZ) and Free Trade Warehousing Zones (FTWZ). The scheme has evolved to align with the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) and Make in India initiative, aiming to enhance India's share in world trade.
