What is FQM?
Fiber Quality Management (FQM) refers to the systematic process of monitoring, evaluating, and ensuring the quality of natural or synthetic fibers throughout the supply chain—from cultivation or production to processing, spinning, and fabric manufacturing. In India, FQM is especially critical in the cotton textile industry, which is a major contributor to the economy and employment. The country's diverse cotton varieties, grown across states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Telangana, require rigorous quality checks to meet domestic and international standards. FQM encompasses parameters such as fiber length, strength, micronaire, uniformity, and trash content. It is implemented at ginning mills, spinning units, and export houses using tools like High Volume Instruments (HVI) and Advanced Fiber Information Systems (AFIS). The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) play key roles in setting guidelines and conducting audits. For students pursuing degrees in textile engineering, agriculture, or fashion technology (e.g., NIFT, IITs with textile departments), understanding FQM principles is essential for careers in quality control, supply chain management, and export compliance. FQM also influences government policies such as the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for cotton, as quality directly affects pricing.
