Fisheries Promotion Zone
Full Form of FPZ
What is FPZ?
A Fisheries Promotion Zone (FPZ) is a designated geographic cluster identified under India’s Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) to boost fish production, processing, and export. These zones bring together fishermen, hatcheries, feed mills, cold chains, and processing units in a concentrated area to achieve economies of scale and reduce post-harvest losses. FPZs are typically established in coastal states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, as well as inland regions with large freshwater bodies. The scheme provides capital subsidies, infrastructure support, and training to stakeholders within the zone. FPZs were launched in 2020 as part of the government’s Blue Revolution goals to double fish farmers’ income and create employment. In the Indian context, FPZs are operational in over 20 districts and are monitored by the Department of Fisheries. For competitive exams such as UPSC and state PCS, understanding FPZs is important as they feature in questions on government schemes, agriculture, and rural development. The zones also help integrate small-scale fishers into formal supply chains, thereby improving their livelihoods and food security.
