Fasting Plasma Glucose
Full Form of FPG
What is FPG?
Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) is a blood test that measures the level of glucose in the blood after a period of at least eight hours of fasting. It is a cornerstone diagnostic tool for diabetes mellitus and prediabetes in India, widely recommended by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Ministry of Health. The test is performed in clinical laboratories, hospitals, and during community health screening camps across urban and rural India. FPG values help categorize individuals into normal (below 100 mg/dL), impaired fasting glucose (100–125 mg/dL), or diabetic (126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests). Its simplicity, low cost, and reliability make it the preferred initial screening method over oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) in resource-limited settings. For medical students preparing for NEET PG or AIIMS exams, understanding FPG cutoffs and its role in diagnosing gestational diabetes and metabolic syndrome is essential. The test is also routinely used to monitor glycemic control in patients already diagnosed with diabetes, especially those on insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents.
