Full Metal Jacket
Full Form of FMJ
What is FMJ?
Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) is a type of bullet or cartridge design where the lead core is completely encased in a harder metal shell, typically copper or a copper alloy. Originally developed for military use, FMJ ammunition ensures reliable feeding in automatic weapons and reduces lead fouling in the barrel. In India, FMJ rounds are widely used by the Indian Armed Forces, paramilitary forces, and police for training and operational purposes because they minimise barrel wear and are cost-effective. The term gained popular recognition from the 1987 Stanley Kubrick film of the same name, which depicted US Marine Corps training and the Vietnam War. While FMJ bullets are legal for civilian ownership under the Arms Rules, their use is restricted in hunting because they are designed to penetrate without expanding, causing less immediate stopping power. In Indian competitive exams such as the UPSC CDS or NDA, questions on ammunition types occasionally appear; candidates should be familiar with the difference between FMJ, hollow-point, and soft-point rounds. Overall, FMJ remains a standard in military small arms ammunition globally, including in India's defence inventory.
