What is FEV?
Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV) is a lung function measurement obtained from spirometry, indicating the volume of air a person can forcibly exhale in a specific time interval—most commonly in one second (FEV1). In India, FEV is a critical parameter for diagnosing and monitoring obstructive lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which are prevalent due to high smoking rates and air pollution. Pulmonologists and general physicians use FEV alongside forced vital capacity (FVC) to calculate the FEV1/FVC ratio, helping differentiate between restrictive and obstructive patterns. The test is performed in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centres across urban and rural India using portable spirometers. For medical students preparing for NEET PG, USMLE, or MBBS exams, understanding FEV interpretation is essential as it frequently appears in respiratory physiology questions.
