Fibre Access Network
Full Form of FAN
What is FAN?
A Fibre Access Network (FAN) is a telecommunications network architecture that uses fibre optic cables to deliver high-speed broadband internet, voice, and video services to end-users. In India, FANs are primarily deployed by state-owned BSNL and private ISPs like Jio and Airtel to expand broadband connectivity, especially under the Digital India and BharatNet initiatives. The network typically consists of optical line terminals (OLT) at the exchange, fibre distribution points, and optical network terminals (ONT) at customer premises. FANs enable scalable bandwidth, low latency, and reliable connections essential for streaming, remote work, and online education. In rural and semi-urban areas, FAN deployment is accelerating to bridge the digital divide. The term is commonly used in telecom engineering, ISP operations, and government broadband projects. For competitive exams like GATE (ECE) and telecom sector recruitment, understanding FAN architecture is crucial as it forms the backbone of modern access networks.
