Fabrication Laboratory
Full Form of FAB
What is FAB?
A Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) is a small-scale workshop equipped with digital fabrication tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, and electronics workstations. These labs enable individuals to design and create physical objects from digital models, promoting a culture of making and innovation. In India, Fab Labs have gained prominence through government initiatives like the Atal Innovation Mission, which has established Atal Tinkering Labs in schools, and the ‘Make in India’ campaign. They are commonly found in engineering colleges, research institutions, and community centers, serving as hubs for students, entrepreneurs, and hobbyists to prototype ideas. Fab Labs are also used in vocational training and rural development projects, empowering local communities to solve everyday problems through technology. For competitive exams like UPSC and state engineering entrance tests, understanding the role of Fab Labs in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship is increasingly relevant, especially in questions related to science and technology policy, startup ecosystems, and Industry 4.0.
