What is EXO?
The exosphere is the outermost layer of Earth's atmosphere, situated above the thermosphere at an altitude of about 600 kilometers and extending up to 10,000 kilometers. It is composed primarily of extremely rarefied gases such as hydrogen and helium, with particles so sparse that they can travel hundreds of kilometres without colliding. This layer plays a crucial role in the gradual transition from Earth's atmosphere to outer space and is where satellites orbit due to minimal atmospheric drag. In India, the exosphere is studied as part of the Class 11 and 12 geography and atmospheric science curricula, particularly under chapters on the structure of the atmosphere. It is also relevant for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state board exams where questions on atmospheric layers frequently appear. The exosphere has no definite upper boundary and merges with interplanetary space; its particles can escape Earth's gravity. Understanding this layer helps students grasp concepts of atmospheric composition, heat transfer, and space weather.
