Electronic Waste Management
Full Form of EWM
What is EWM?
Electronic Waste Management (EWM) refers to the systematic handling, disposal, and recycling of discarded electronic and electrical equipment. In India, EWM is governed by the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, amended in 2018, under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. These rules mandate that producers, consumers, and bulk waste generators ensure environmentally sound management of e-waste through collection, dismantling, and recycling channels. The framework introduces Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), requiring manufacturers to finance and organize take-back systems for end-of-life products. EWM is critical in India, one of the world's largest generators of e-waste, to prevent toxic substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium from contaminating soil and water. It applies across urban and industrial sectors, involving municipal corporations, recycling units, and certified dismantlers. Compliance is enforced by State Pollution Control Boards, and violations attract penalties under the Environment Protection Act. Students preparing for competitive exams such as UPSC, state PCS, and environmental science syllabi must understand EWM as part of India’s environmental governance and sustainable development efforts. The rules also align with global frameworks like the Basel Convention, enhancing India’s commitment to responsible waste management.
