Ebola Virus Disease
Full Form of EVD
What is EVD?
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a severe, often fatal illness in humans caused by the Ebola virus, a member of the Filoviridae family. The disease is characterized by sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, internal and external bleeding. EVD is transmitted to people from wild animals (e.g., fruit bats, primates) and spreads through human-to-human transmission via direct contact with blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected persons. In India, EVD is not endemic, but the government maintains strict surveillance at international airports and ports to prevent importation. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued preparedness guidelines for state health departments, especially in metropolitan cities with high international travel. EVD gained global attention during the 2014–2016 West African outbreak, which spurred Indian health authorities to strengthen infection control protocols. For students preparing for NEET or AIIMS, EVD is a high-yield topic in microbiology and preventive medicine, often appearing in questions about viral hemorrhagic fevers, biosafety levels, and outbreak management. Understanding the chain of transmission and public health measures is essential for exams and for building a career in medicine or epidemiology.
