Electronic Verification Code
Full Form of EVC
What is EVC?
Electronic Verification Code (EVC) is a temporary security code used in India to authenticate online financial transactions, especially for card-not-present (CNP) payments via credit or debit cards. It is typically a one-time password (OTP) sent to the cardholder’s registered mobile number or email as part of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance and RBI’s two-factor authentication (2FA) mandate. EVC plays a crucial role in reducing fraudulent transactions in e-commerce, utility bill payments, and fund transfers. In the Indian banking ecosystem, EVC is generated by the card-issuing bank and must be entered within a short validity period to complete a transaction. It is widely used across all major payment gateways like Razorpay, CCAvenue, and Paytm. For banking and finance exams (e.g., IBPS PO, SBI Clerk), aspirants may be asked about EVC as a component of secure digital payment guidelines. Understanding EVC helps users safely navigate India’s rapidly growing digital payment landscape.
