Extra-Uterine Hysterectomy
Full Form of EUH
What is EUH?
Extra-Uterine Hysterectomy (EUH) is a specialized surgical procedure involving the removal of the uterus when it is located outside its normal anatomical position, often due to conditions such as severe uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, pelvic adhesions, or complications from ectopic pregnancy. In India, EUH is performed in advanced gynaecological centres and tertiary care hospitals, particularly when the uterus is grossly distorted or densely adherent to pelvic structures, making standard hysterectomy techniques difficult or dangerous. The procedure requires meticulous dissection to avoid injury to the ureters, bladder, and bowel. EUH is typically carried out under general anaesthesia with a multidisciplinary team. Recovery may be prolonged compared to conventional hysterectomy. In the context of Indian medical education, EUH is covered in postgraduate obstetrics and gynaecology curricula and appears in NEET PG, MS Obstetrics, and diploma exams. Understanding EUH is crucial for future surgeons who may encounter complex uterine pathologies in both urban and rural settings. With increasing awareness about gynaecological health and the availability of advanced surgical facilities in metro cities, the procedure is gaining recognition. However, in smaller towns, diagnosis of extra-uterine conditions may rely heavily on ultrasound and clinical judgment, making EUH a demanding but essential skill.
